Why the advertised price is rarely the real one: token systems, hard caps, annual-only discounts, and how to work out your true monthly cost before subscribing.

Platforms in this category price in one of three ways, and the difference matters more than the headline number.
Token or credit systems β used by OurDream, Candy AI, Secrets AI and SweetDream AI β mean the subscription buys access while each image, video or voice message draws down a monthly allowance. Once it's gone you buy more. For anyone generating regularly, the top-ups become the dominant cost, and the advertised price is a floor rather than a total.
Hard caps β used by DreamGF and SoulGen β set a fixed number of generations per cycle and charge nothing beyond it. You cannot exceed your budget, and you cannot buy your way past the limit either. On paper these look more expensive. In practice they are the only plans whose annual cost you can state on day one.
Bring-your-own-API β essentially just Janitor AI β moves you to per-token billing with a model provider. Quality is bounded by your budget rather than by a subscription tier, but the cost is genuinely unpredictable.
Nearly every price advertised in this category assumes a twelve-month commitment. The gap is large: OurDream is $9.99/month annually against $19.99 monthly, Candy AI is $5.99 against $12.99, SweetDream is $5.83 against $12.99. Paying monthly typically costs between 40% and 100% more.
Financially the annual plan is almost always correct. The risk is not financial, it's platform risk. This category changes fast: models get swapped, features get removed, companies shut down. Replika removed erotic roleplay from existing companions with no warning in 2023, which for annual subscribers meant paying for something they could no longer use. Committing twelve months to a platform with no track record is a materially different bet from committing to one that has been operating for years.
Start from what you actually intend to do. If you mainly chat, a token allowance is usually comfortable and the sticker price is close to the true one. If you generate images daily, assume you will exhaust the allowance and price in top-ups β at which point a dedicated generator with flat pricing, like PornPen at $15/month unlimited, often works out cheaper than a companion platform's bundled generation.
The common expensive mistake is buying a companion platform for its image generation. Bundled generation is almost always weaker than a dedicated tool at the same price, and the token costs make it more expensive too. If images are the point, buy an image generator.
Check the billing descriptor. Most platforms here use a deliberately generic label β an unrelated company name, or a string like 'WEBSERVICES'. That is what 'discreet billing' means. Note somewhere findable what you signed up for, because a descriptor you don't recognise months later is easy to mistake for fraud, and disputing a charge you actually made generally ends the account.
Check the refund terms before committing rather than after. Annual plans in this category are frequently non-refundable.
Check whether cancellation is self-service. If cancelling requires emailing support, factor in that friction.
Advertised entry prices cluster between roughly $6 and $16 a month, but the sticker price is frequently not the real one. Cancel inside the platform's own account settings first, and keep the confirmation. Refund policies vary and annual plans are frequently non-refundable, so read the terms before committing rather than after. If a platform will not respond and you believe the charge is wrong, a card dispute is the fallback β but treat it as a last resort, because chargebacks generally end the account and any characters on it.
